The rafters will likely be 2×8, 2×10 or 2×12 depending on the size of the shed, the type of roof and the span the rafter will be making. The plywood by today’s construction standards in the Midwest is going to be 1/2″ osb. When you get to the shingles your options are open there are traditional asphalt shingle, cedar shake and clay tiles to name a few.

Metal Building Kits and Their Advantages

Why choose a metal building kit is a common question. One of the biggest reasons is that they are quick and quite easy to assemble as compared to traditional building methods such as using bricks and mortar or wood. They are a sturdy and very cost effective alternative to wooden built buildings.

One can find many types of prefab metal building kits of all sizes from garden sheds, aircraft hangers, garages and warehouses. The most common kit for use at home are those for extra storage and garages. They are excellent for cars, gardening tools and kids toys.

Traditionally, most commercial buildings have been constructed from metal building kits and many industrial complexes are built this way. You only need to take a short drive around the local industrial estate to find that many of the buildings are constructed out of steel.

They can be erected at a very fast speed and fitted out quite easily which makes them very cost effective as an alternative. Less profit is lost from running a business or building up a business if time is not lost in the construction phase of a new property. Most companies want a short lag phase between deciding on a new building project and seeing and receiving the finished construction.

Metal buildings are extremely durable and, therefore, found in areas where erosion is a problem, where there are extremes of weather and where there is a susceptibility from insect attack, like termites. They exhibit both a combination of flexibility and sturdiness and, therefore, are ideal in areas of high risk of earthquakes. They are also much more resistant to fire than wooden buildings which may result in reduced insurance premiums.

New metal building kits do not necessarily mean a self build kit and in fact, quite often, it is wise to utilize the services of a professional builder whom has more experience in constructing these types of buildings.

You may find it relatively straight forward to construct a building from one of these kits if you are an experienced builder or you have plenty of time on your hands. However, if you want the kit to go up quicker then I would advise hiring a professional. It can work out much more cost effective in the long run due to the extra speed.

In summary, metal building kits are a much better option to brick or wood structures in terms of speed of build and their resistance to the environment. They are usually of very high quality and are well engineered structures. You will probably find that these features will add up to a money saving project.
