How To Uninstall Window Film
Decorative window films is not intended to be permanent, you will have to remove it some time. The sheets can only stay in place for a few years, with adhesion strength softening as time passes. Improperly applied films deteriorate even quicker due to surface bubbles and other installation flaws.
Consider remving your window film once marks of wear and tear come out. It might require a bit of work, but observe these step-by-step directions, and you will have everything done in about an hour.
1. Inspect for detached edges. Slowly raise these edges with your fingers or you may use a razor blade or penknife. Pull away as much as you can without tearing the sheet and damaging the pane. The point is to pull off as large piece of the film as possible. However, older films tend to be crumbly and break at various parts, making the task of removing more complex.
2. Much of the film you will not be able to tug off by hand. So you will need to spray ammonia liberally across the entire window. Saturated with this solution, the [glueadhesive] that holds the film in place will begin to dissolve. Wipe away any surplus chemical with a cloth or towel.
3. Cover the entire glass surface with wide sheets of plastic or garbage bags, if available, and secure with masking tape. This will allow the ammonia to soak into the film. Let it stand for at least 45 minutes to an hour. Make it two hours if the weather is cooler.
4. You can take out the cover and check if the window peel has weakened sufficiently every 15 minutes. If there are no obvious results, you may spray another coating of ammonia and wrap the pane once more.
5. If the film is adequately soft, use a razor blade or any thin piece of metal to scrape it off. Apply more ammonia to tough spots for smooth removal.
6. Continue the process of spraying and scraping until nothing remains of the film. Use soap, water, and sponge to scrub up remaining traces of adhesive. Wash the pane thoroughly. Once the surface is residue-free, pat-dry the window using a towel. You can use glass cleaner for better results.
Helpful tips
• Just as with other chemicals, wear a pair of gloves, safety glasses and mask when treating with ammonia. If you have allergic reactions, this process is a must.
• Make sure the area has a good ventilation when you apply ammonia. If necessary, open the other windows of your home to allow air to circulate.
• If you decide to purchase an ammonia-based cleaner, find out if the label indicates that the solution can be used with window film.
• Water may be tapped as an alternative to ammonia. You won’t be able to peel off the film as fast, but this won’t ruin your molding and window frame.
• Cover furniture and other items with tarpaulin or garbage bags to prevent equipment casualty caused by the chemical.
• For wide areas covered with window film, use a new razor blade when it becomes dull.
There are several ways of removing window film. The approach may differ slightly for various types of privacy window film. But certain rules are general. One, pull the sheets slowly so as not to tear the material. Two, weaken the film’s attachment adequately. Three, be careful when scraping off any residue so as not to damage the glass.
