How Does A Homemade Wind Generator Work?

In prior articles we explained why homemade wind generators are a practical alternative for a system you would buy and have installed professionally. They are rather simple machines, from a parts and assembly standpoint, and the materials are easy to get your hands on. In addition, the expense of building your own wind turbine is a fraction of that charged by professional installers.

First, there are 2 kinds of wind turbine, known as horizontal axis (HAWT) and vertical axis (VAWT). The HAWT is the type you are probably most familiar with and is the version we’re discussing here. I see almost daily reports that there is some new breakthrough version of the vertical axis turbine which claims to generate more power in a smaller profile. Don’t believe it. Most experts agree, and extensive testing supports that that the most efficient means of generating wind power is the horizontal axis turbine and until someone PROVES otherwise, that’s just the way it is going to be.

Anyway, homemade wind generators are fairly simple machines. The standard 3 blades are shaped into a twist and this influences their movement when the wind engages them. The blades connect in the center to a hub and the blade movement spins the hub. The hub is attached to an alternator – much like you would find in a car – inside which is located copper wrapped coils and magnetic rotors.

The electricity generated flows through wiring from the alternator to your energy distribution system. The power can be tied directly to the power grid to supplement and reduce commercial power consumption, or can be stored in batteries and used as needed.

A wind turbine needs to be able to turn from side to side because wind wind speed and direction both change frequently. The turbine will produce more current at higher blade rotation speeds, but only up to a point. Beyond its maximum power producing capacity, the alternator begins to experience stress.

So at wind speeds below the maximum, the system must turn into the wind to achieve the highest speed possible at the time. It must also be able to tilt partially away from the wind (known as “furling”) to maintain near maximum output once top speed has been reached.     

This is the purpose of the tail assembly. A tail boom extends outward from the center and away from the blades at a right angle to the blades. At the end of the boom is the tail vane. It all gets mounted to a multi-directional swivel base which permits the necessary turning and furling described above. 

Finally, the turbine must be elevated into the wind by some sort of tower. Towers can be mounted into the ground or in the case of some smaller turbines, attached to the side of a structure. The tower height plays an important part in overall efficiency because wind speeds are higher and more sustained at higher altitudes. It is important to recognize that the contour of the ground and surrounding structures influence wind turbulence at lower altitudes.

That pretty much sums it up. Hopefully you can see that there isn’t a whole lot to a homemade wind generator despite this somewhat simple overview.
