Decorator’s Guide To Measuring Carpet For Stairs

While deciding between turtles metal wall sculptures or metal wall sculpture is mainly a matter of personal preference, before buying carpet for your stairs, it is important to measure the stairs properly to know how much carpet you need to buy. Purchasing too much will be a waste even though purchasing too little will make it challenging to stretch or cover the area only partially. A common mistake in measuring carpet is simply measuring the width and the length of the stair and multiplying it by the number of stairs. It is important to take both the risers and the lips of the risers into account. In order to accurately measure the stairs for carpet, you will need a measuring tape, pen and paper.

Measuring the length
Begin at the top of the staircase, measuring the length of the steps. First, measure the rise of the stair step, which is the portion of the step that is actually stepped on. To do this, the measuring tape should be placed at the very depth of the step and stretched across the very tip. Next measure the fall of the stair, which is the backing of the step. To do this, the tape measure should be placed at the joint of the immediate step and then stretched upwards. Add the measurement of the rise to the measurement of the fall. Add a supply of two inches to the sum of the rise and fall measurement to allow for the curvature of the step and padding. Count the number of stairs that have the exact dimensions as the one that you measured and multiply the number of the total measurement to the number of steps. Measure the rise and falls of any other steps that has a different dimension the same way that you measured the first step; make sure that you do add two inches to the step and multiply it to the number of steps with the exact same size. Calculate the total by adding all the sums of the different sizes.

Measuring the width
In measuring the width, start with the widest step of the staircase. Although there may be different widths, you will merely need to measure the widest one as the width of the carpet should be cut according to the widest step. The width cannot be cut individually when you buy the carpet. Position the measuring tape on one side of your wall, stretching it across up to the other side of the wall. To account for padding, allow a surplus of two inches onto your measurement for width.

Measuring straight stairs
If your stairs have uniformly sized steps, all with the exact same dimensions, you can stretch the measuring tape or ruler on one entire step starting at the inside edge of the tread and over the outside of the tread, down along the riser and up to the top of the next tread. Add two inches to the measurement and multiply by the number of steps excluding the last riser on the top landing. Measure the landings and add it to the measurement of the tread, being certain to add an additional inch to be turned in at the ends. To determine how many number of yards of carpet runner you require, divide the total by 36.

Vines and Bones
Consider using driftwood, grapevine, or tree branches to create a chandelier for a rustic country space. For a rustic country ambience, you can also use animal bones and antlers. Expertly Decorate Your Living Room With Simple Sewing

Of course you can update your living room with contemporary metal wall hangings, metal artwork or copper wall art, but with a few basic skills, you can ramp up your design efforts and really give your living room a personal touch. There are many simple projects that you can sew for your living room that require little more than sewing a straight line. Find colors and fabrics that appeal to you and look good in your room, and remember to choose some bold accent colors. Then you can start sewing and put together a great look for your living room space.

Easy and Fun Throw Pillows.

A really satisfying project is to make throw pillows for your couch. If you have so-called naked pillows or pillows that don’t have slip covers, you can simply make additional covers for your pillows and then switch them around when the mood hits you. To make the cover you simply outline the pillow on your fabric, and cut two pieces of fabric out, one for the front, and one for the back. With the right sides together, sew along the three sides of the pillow cover using about a 1/2 inch seam allowance.

On the fourth side, sew in several inches from either side, leaving most of the middle open. Then sew a strip of Velcro along the top edge and bottom edge. Insert the pillow and press shut. You can take your pillow cover off to wash it or to change it with the seasons of the year whenever you wish.

Fun and Simple Slip Cover.

Making a slipcover for a rectangular ottoman is a great way to update its look quickly. Measure the top width and length. Measure the side length and width, and measure the end length and width. Add one inch to the edge of the measurements that you took.

Place your fabric with right sides together and then sew the side pieces to the fabric’s top. Then sew each of the four corner seams. Try it on the ottoman to be certain that it fits correctly. Next, flip it inside out and then turn the hem under, then iron and sew.

Simple to Sew Coffee Table Coasters and Runner Set.

To add a little color to your coffee table you can put together a table runner. Simply decide how long and wide you want it and cut out two strips of material. You can choose two strips of the same material, or you can pick out fabrics that complement one another. With right sides together, sew around each edge, leaving about six inches open at one end. The next step is to turn the table runner inside out and iron flat. Fold under the edges of the open six inches and sew shut. You can add tassels to the corners or fringe along the ends for embellishments if you wish.

To make coasters for your coffee table, merely cut out two five-inch squares and one five inch square of batting. Place two pieces of fabric with right sides together and lay the piece of batting on top of the pile. Pin and sew, being certain to leave one end open. Snip corners, flip inside out and sew up the open end. Iron flat, and you have a coaster. Now do that five more times, and you have a set of decorator coasters. If you do not want square coasters, you can sew any shape that you wish.
