CSR Minute: Germany to Lead World in Offshore Wind Power, Says Enventi Research;

New research shows that Germany will become the world leader in offshore generated wind power as early as 2015. Enventi, a UK consultancy company, reports that German projects have ordered 2000 kilometers of wind farm-related, submarine power cables. Germany has plans for the installation of an integrated High-voltage Direct-Current—HVDC— network that will allow clusters of offshore of wind farms to be developed in northwest Europe. A group of global organizations has launched a practical guide to help companies maintain operational security while respecting human rights. The Implementation Guidance Tools are targeted especially at companies operating in geographical areas of conflict and weak governance, and address such issues as stakeholder engagement and risk assessment. The Tools are an outgrowth of the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights, a program developed in 2000 by governments, companies in the extractive and energy sector, and NGOs. The group of sponsors includes the International Council on Mining and Metals, the International Finance Corporation, and the Global Oil and Gas Industry Association for Environmental and Social Issues, with support from the International Committee of the Red Cross. Swiss Army Knife – Best Pocket Knife

When searching for handy cutting tools, the best pocket knife is a Swiss Army knife. It was invented in 1897, and is continually being upgraded to maintain its handy status with new and practical additions. Let’s take a look at some of its progress as it has unfolded over time.

As expected of knives, this one has two blades, a main blade and a smaller size, each with their own purposes. It still has the original features of a corkscrew and can opener, along with the memorable bottle opener. A choice of Phillips head or flat head screw drivers, a convenient nail file, and hook for pulling shoelaces tight.

With each progression of technology, more tools have been added with a couple of them for personal hygiene. A convenient pair of tweezers, and toothpick became standard issue, and for food preparation they added a blade to clean the scales off fish. During extended tours in the wilderness, these knives proved to be indispensable for hunters and catching fish.

This little European marvel continued to evolve with the addition of a ballpoint pen and magnifying glass. This glass is used for starting a fire in dry leaves to create a means of cooking and to provide warmth from the cold climates. There is always a possibility of needed something to write with, and the ink pen fills that bill.

A few more items which can be found on one of the Swiss Army knife are a hex wrench with bits, and pliers. By using the hook and a pair of pliers, a person can easily make a shelter from the rain by using a rain slicker and string (or vines) to fashion a lean-to structure.

The computer industry took it toll on this product and made it possible to have a USB flash drive on the device, along with a digital clock and altimeter. You can even get a laser pointer, LED light and an MP3 player with these devices. The hex wrench and pliers have been found useful in maintain related computer equipment, while traveling.

The 32GB Flash drive and Bluetooth technology were added in 2010, and makes this a very useful tool for traveling, even camping where a wireless laptop would be handy. In addition to these, there are plans to make a version that is flight-friendly for individuals who travel with the airlines. However, this model is not expected to have blades.

Some Thoughts To Consider Before Buying A Table Saw

If you have finally decided that your woodwork shop needs a table saw, and you want to start hunting for one, you’ll soon find out that there is a wide range of them.  You should not rush into buying a table saw. Instead, take the time to decide what woodworking projects are most likely to occupy your time.  A most decisive factor in choosing the table saw you want to have in your woodwork shop is the time you can afford to spend there.  Another consideration is the space that you have for your table saw and where or how it will be stored.  Last but not least is the money you can afford to spend on a table saw.

What are the choices of table saws?

There are basically four different categories of table saws that you might consider. There are portable table saws; bench top tables saws, contractor table saws and cabinet table saws.  The following is a brief description of each category.

Portable table saws:

Just like the name would suggest, these are designed to be moved around with ease.  If you do most of your work on “location” then this is certainly a wise choice.  Portable table saws are actually downsized versions of the permanent larger models. The motor power is lower and the work area more confined, but they can do all the tasks the larger models do.

Bench top table saws:

These table saws are ideal for work in a limited space.  These saws may be used as portable saws with the difference being they do not have roller wheels and lengthened legs like the portable saw.  You can use them in limited spaces and the motor caliber is the same as that of a portable table saw.

Contractor table saws:

These table saws are also portable. However, they have a bigger motor and are normally used by contractors.  In addition to that, they are a lot heavier and sturdier.  The tables that come with the saws are usually made of cast iron with extensions that can accommodate bigger projects.   You don’t really have to be a contractor to purchase this table saw. If you like more power in your saw and are a dedicated woodworker, this could be a good choice for you.  No matter the size or type of task you need to do, this table saw will do a great job, and is therefore a great option.

Cabinet table saws:

If you’re fonder of cabinetwork, you should really consider this table saw.  They are for the serious minded crafter and are designed to be very study and long lasting.  These permanent-type table saws are made of cast iron, encased in steel, and boast a high motor power as well as a considerable work area.  The motor is enclosed inside the cabinet makes it much more efficient and quiet so that the woodworker can use it for hours at a time.  As far as motor power goes, there is no other table saw that can match the cabinet saw.

In case you do most of your work out of your woodwork shop, or have little space, or like to work with wood only every now and then, then you can forget about the cabinet table saw.  This type of table saw is the right choice only for those who leave and breathe for woodworking.

Sharpen Your Woodworking Tools

Is it necessary to buy a power sharpener to keep your woodworking tools sharp?  You can always just use a stone to keep the blades sharp.  The power sharpener though is the best choice when dealing with blades that are heavily dented or missing teeth.  The edge of the blade will need to be ground until you get rid of all the nicks and dents in it, so as to make it run smoothly.

What you need to know about grinders:

Woodworking tools are more delicate tools that are not suitable for use on a regular shop grinder.  The grinding wheel needs to be changed out with one that is specifically designed for use on woodworking tools.  You can’t ensure accurate cuts with woodworking bladed tools if you use a standard grinder wheel on them. Standard wheels were made for sharpening lawn mower blades and the like.

Another downside of the standard shop grinding machine is the fact that it has incredibly small rests, which makes holding the grinding in check near to impossible.  The rests need to be upgraded when working with woodworking tools.

Choosing between dry grinders and wet grinders

When buying a grinder you’ll find that there are two kinds: the dry grinder and the wet grinder. Common shop grinders normally have a wheel attached to the mandrel and are powered by a motor.  It also comes with tool rests to steer the blade on the grinding stone.  Vertically set, dry grinder wheels are generally eight inches in width, sometimes larger.  It is preferable that you use a larger grinding wheel, since small wheels are the source of a lot of hollow grinding.

A wet grinder will keep the tools cooled down while grinding and shavings that come from the stone are literally washed away.  Other advantages of this type of grinder are the speed, slower than that of a dry grinder, and the position of the wheel which can also be horizontal, not only vertical.

Wet grinders are submerged in a container partially filled with water, providing thus a constant water-flow during grinding.  Bigger is better when it comes to wet grinders.

The trouble with grinders

The problem with dry grinders is that during grinding, the blade is bound to overheat, thus losing strength and hardness.  Another thing that happens is the residue of the grinding material can create a glaze on the blade and it will make the tool less useful.  In this case you’ll need a dressing tool to refurbish it. With the wet grinder one of the greatest drawbacks is the water that needs to be dripped onto the wheel while the grinding takes place.  The water is usually kept in a tank that is affixed above the machine.  One of the biggest differences between the two types of grinders may be the cost.

Using A Chainsaw Is Easy

Your hedges are growing out of control and larger trees are impossible to manage but still the idea of owning and operating a chainsaw scares you.

Without the ability to remove your tree limbs and debris you will have to pay for the services of tree-trimmers and landscapers and they charge a small fortune.

There is another option because chainsaws are not always necessarily large, dangerous and difficult to use.

Many manufacturers make smaller scaled models that are not too heavy to use or difficult to handle for most men and many women.

Different types of jobs and cuts can be achived by both gas versions and electric versions of chainsaws.

Electric models are less powerful and will only handle smaller limbs. On the positive side, however, there is no cranking required and a novice may feel much more comfortable handling one. Some types are rechargeable while others require a long extension chord and a number offer both options for use.

For a small yard with small branches and limbs less than a couple of inches thick these are a great option. You may still need chain oil to keep the machine running smoothly, but you won’t need fuel. When shopping for an electric chainsaw, handle it to determine how heavy it is and if you think you could manage it safely. Turn it on and let the salesperson show you how it runs so that you can hear the engine. Buy the largest model you feel comfortable using as it will be powerful enough to handle the greatest number of tasks.

A gas model should be considered if you have larger limbs more than four inches thick and more debris and dealing with trees that fall down and need to be chopped up. Gas models can be bought later on down the track as you get used to the one you have and are in need of something stronger.

Many manufacturers sell chainsaws that are specifically designed for pruning, that is what they do. Pruning chainsaws are much more lighter than large chainsaws in fat the bars are just 14-inches and the engines are smaller making it easier on the upper body. They run on a mixture of gas and oil and require chain oil as well. In addition to a longer bar – which determines the biggest limb or tree they can cut – they also have more powerful motors than their electric counterparts. Cranking ability is needed in these as well.

To get a great gas-powered chainsaw follow the same guidelines to select one. Handle it so that you’re sure the weight is comfortable for you and ask a salesperson if there is a model that can be cranked for you. Holding a running chainsaw is always the best demonstration your could get.

Use safety goggles, ankle protectors and safety boots no matte what model chainsaw you are using. Before taking the job on yourself try your best to get an experienced chainsaw operator to give you some tips.
