Debate in UK over benefits of green economy
The economy regularly gets in the way of climate change action as green initiatives give way to budget restraints. In the UK, environmentalists say the future for the Britain should include hundreds of wind turbines – creating free and clean energy well into the future as well as stimulating the economy. But its government has suggested that cutting carbon emissions would threaten jobs instead. Al Jazeera’s Laurence Lee reports from northeastern England.

Candidates for the Oct. 6 provincial election — Treat Hull, Todd Smith, Sherry Hayes, Trueman Tuck and Leona Dombrowsky — squared off on the issue of energy with questions fired off by Stevie Cameron, former host of CBC’s The Fifth Estate, and local journalists Steve Campbell and Rick Conroy. The public also had a chance to pose questions to the candidates. The Debate was held at the Picton United Church on Sept. 20.
